The NSS Unit of J.N. College, Boko, stands out as one of the college's most dynamic and engaged social service units. Operating under the auspices of Gauhati University, this unit has a rich history of providing diverse social services, all made possible through the commitment and enthusiasm of student volunteers. Since its establishment, the unit has actively engaged in various community service initiatives, extending its impact both within the college campus and in the surrounding adopted villages, police stations, and local communities. Students voluntarily join the NSS Unit, showing a commendable dedication to contributing to society while managing their academic responsibilities. The college appoints a well-trained Program Officer to oversee the activities the NSS undertakes, ensuring that volunteers are well-guided and supported in their endeavours. Each year, on the 24th of September, the NSS Day is celebrated, fostering a spirit of community and urging more students to participate in this noble initiative. Currently, the NSS Unit comprises 69 student volunteers, with 50 recruits welcomed in 2022, all of whom are eager to embark on a journey of social change. **BIRTH OF N.S.S** NSS was founded in September 1969 during the Gandhi Centenary year as part of a broader visionary approach included in the Fourth Five-Year Plan (1969-1974), emphasizing the importance of youth participation in national development. **AIM OF NSS** The primary aim of the NSS is to develop the personality of students through active community service, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy as they contribute to the welfare of society. ** OBJECTIVES OF NSS ** 1. To Work with and Among People 2. To Engage in Creative and Constructive Social Action 3. To Enhance Knowledge of Self and Community 4. To Apply Scholarship to Practical Problems 5. To Develop Leadership Skills 6. To Acquire Skills for Self-Employment 7. To Bridge the Knowledge Gap 8. To Promote Service to Weaker Sections. **NATURE OF N.S.S.** The NSS is a prestigious social service initiative launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, exclusively aimed at undergraduate students aspiring to enhance their social awareness and civic responsibilities.
