College History
During the early sixties, the ideas of opening an institution of higher education in the remote part of South Kamrup came to the mind of the people of Boko area Late Prabin Kumar Choudhury, the then Minister of Transport, Assam, who represented the Boko Constituency of the Assam Assembly and Late Achyut Kanta Adhikary took the leading role in the establishment of a college at Boko and he was given the charge as part time honorary In-charge Principal & Secretary on 1st August 1964. In the long run, the college came in to existence on 3rd August, 1964 and named it after the hallowed memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India’s first Prime Minister who had breathed his last on 27th May in that year. The liberal policy of the Gauhati Uiversity in granting the affiliation to colleges of rural areas extended a positive support of this institution to emerge. Under the stewardships of Prabin Kumar Choudhury and Achyut Kanta Adhikary, the institution has made remarkable progress. His Excellency the Governor of Assam was pleased to allot 100 bighas of land (33 acre approx.) for the college at Jarapara V.G.R., two km west of Boko Police Station on the northern side of NH-37. On 1st of September 1965, Mr. J.C. Nath took over the charge of full time Principal of the institution and served the college till 31st May 1995. Thereafter, the college received 1st Degree Affiliation in the year 1967 from the Gauhati University. The Arts stream received Deficit Grants in Aid on 1st September 1969. The college was provincialized from 1st December 2005. The Science stream was started in the year 1986 and on received Deficit Grants in Aid o 25th March 1998.
From its inception the college has traversed a steady course towards expanding its academic and infrastructural needs. At present there are 14 departments with honours, nine in Arts stream and five in Science stream. Beyond that the college has initiated some career oriented and vocational courses to cater to the needs of the students of the locality.
At present the college has grown up into a full-fledged well known institution with academic excellence and co-curricular activities, particularly in the field of games and sports, culture, literature and social activities, completing its glorious fifty years of existence in the year 2014. To identify its strengths and weaknesses the college has got itself accredited by the NAAC in the year 2004 and again in 2014 and obtained Grade ‘B’. In 2019 after receiving the prestigious Star Status from the DBT, Govt. of India, our college has set a benchmark and became the first college of Assam to receive Star Status from the Department of Biotechnology Govt. of India.
