GLIMPSE OF BODO DEPARTMENT
The department of Bodo was established in the year 1993. Since its inception the department has been trying to provide Higher Education in the regional language, Bodo. At the beginning the department provided Extension Service (H.S.) in 1993. Since the subject was newly introduced in the Gauhati University itself, there were no qualified lectures to teach in the Department of Bodo in Jawaharlal Nehru College, Boko as per UGC norms. Gauhati University introduced the PG Diploma in Bodo at that time. At the beginning, the department offered only Higher Secondary classes. Mr. Jibeswar Koch was the founder lecturer of the Department. He was appointed as a Tutor for one year. The second lecturer of the department was Mr. Dharma Kanta Boro (1995) who served for the next year. Later on, Mr. Binod Goyary (1995), Janoki Boro (1997), were appointed as contractual lecturers. But they did not continue their services. Miss Bhairabi Baro joined in 2002 as a non-sanctioned and later on regularised in 2012. Ansuma Kh. Bodosa was appointed as a contractual lecturer in 2004 and joined in permanent post in 2020. Mr. Jyotish Basumatary (2009) and Mrs. Jili Alchiary (2013) were appointed as contractual lecturers. Moreover, Dr. Tanu Mashahary joined in a permanent post on 1st June 2023. Presently, Miss Bhairabi Baro is the Head of the Department. The Department offers three years degree course in both Major and General as per the prescribe syllabus of the Gauhati University.
The department has also started three months Add on course in “spoken Bodo†on 28th Dec, 2021. Its aims are to promote widespread fluency, ensuring that Bodo remains a living, dynamic language spoken by future generations across diverse spheres, from daily life to education, media, and governance, fostering unity and pride among Bodo speakers worldwide.
